10 Tips for Job Reference Pages

You’ve done everything you can to convince the employer you’re the right person for the job so now it’s your reference’s turn. Hopefully, you’ve been maintaining your references, otherwise your chances of getting hired can end here. By following these tips, your reference sheet will assist you immensely in your search for jobs in Buffalo.

Have 3-5 references consisting of past managers, colleagues, co-workers, distinguished individuals (well known, local persons and people of academia). A current worker at the company you are applying to is a good starting point.

  1. Get permission from these people and maintain contact with them at least once a year if you are no longer close. Christmas and New Years is a great time to get back in touch to ask how they are doing and what they’ve been up to.
  2. Include your most relevant references at the top. This may change per the job applied to.
  3. Give your references a copy of your resume. If you use different resumes for different jobs, your references can get one with the most amount of information or just the info. relevant to the type of reference you’ll be using them for.
  4. Make sure they are aware of the type of reference they are to give such as personal, professional, and character. It is perfectly OK to discuss what they may be asked and what would be an appropriate answer. This isn’t another of way of saying tell them what to say, but you have to make sure certain info. about you is included to keep answers relevant to the job.
  5. It is a good idea to call them before the interview because the employer may call them as soon as you leave.
  6. Try to build up a pool of references and not including them with your Resume or Cover Letter because you may learn at the interview who you should use as a reference so don’t shoot yourself in the foot by giving out your references pre-maturely.
  7. If you don’t have many professional references at all, it’s perfectly fine using past career counselors, teachers/professors, volunteer organizations. Basically, the employer needs people to vouch for you and that’s the bottom line.
  8. Been fired? An HR rep could still give you a reference. Unless you burned some bridges, the HR rep can give you a basic reference. This will show the recruiter that you left on good terms and someone who will not cause trouble if it doesn’t work out there either. Every HR rep knows that people are let go every day so being fired not a major road block; its how you handled being fired that is important.
  9. Lastly, a glowing review will benefit you immensely so pick your references carefully and work with them on what should be said. A plain, vanilla reference will help you in your jobsearch, but when the employer hears the enthusiasim in the reference’s voice, it’ll be so much better
